There is always the question, in my mind, of "common sense". This is something not very common anymore, as the latest batch of upsets, arguments and "news" stories shows quite clearly.

Somewhere between Turbans, veils, bangles and beads, crucifixes etc., exists (I presume) a person, who can make life easy or simpler or much more confusing and difficult, depending on the mood of a moment.

Of course these religious questions have no basis on "common sense", religion itself not being based on good common sense, but rather a question (as I understand it) of personal belief.

Everyone should be, and generally is, allowed their own personal belief, and these are grouped in what we called generally, World Religions, or "organized" religions.

This is fine, so long as the starting point is not forgotten - i.e. that all these things are based on individual and individuals.

Unfortunately, it would appear that as soon as one declares oneself as a "practicing" whatever, there are a whole batch of "upper echelon" officials, who start handing down orders! Not recommendations, mark you, but ORDERS! This can of course be abused, and very often is.

How otherwise can one order certain faithfuls to cover up almost everything, whilst adhering to a society whose laws state that the wearing of masks is forbidden?

Because one side of the coin is strictly against anything related to same-sex marriages or contacts, legal contract between same-sex people (as in French "pacts") the question must be asked why, and how, they can live in a society where, on the other side of the same coin, the laws state, quite clearly, that "no individual may suffer prejudice on the grounds of his or her sexual orientation".

The same people who require of their "believers" to live in the confusion, profit to the maximum, from the same law, forbidding "prejudice due to Religious beliefs", but only as far as it concerns their own chosen belief!

Strangely enough, I think that the argument about veils etc, actually shows a different side to modern day living. Very few people, nowadays, actually have the force to look the person they are talking to, FULLY, in the eyes, somehow they find this disturbing! Most veils still allow the eyes to be free, so no problem should really exist. The eyes, we are told, are the entrance to the soul, and maybe this is why fewer and fewer people are able to look directly in the eyes of a conversation partner. There may be too much truth to be read in the eyes, as opposed to that which is being said!

Turbans, bangles and beads do not really disturb anyone, except that these things signify a difference of race, creed, belief, way of living and many other things. Then again, if one does not wish to be confronted with other people of different origins and beliefs etc., then one can easily avoid them. Of course, avoiding them would (and does) show a large deficit in the character of the person concerned, but that again is their personal choice.

Just a final thought on the subject, FORCING somebody to accept other traditions, beliefs, or anything else, is a complete waste of time, and will eventually be refuted. I recall that the (mainly) white male and female missionaries of the (mainly) black/coloured continents did their job by simply imposing their own views and beliefs, habits, traditions, and everything else upon the indigenous "heathens" , whilst robbing them blind of everything of value!

Logically, this attitude is now being repaid.

Equality, liberty, democracy, and all the other words bandied about as being the basics of mankind are probably the closest we will ever get to perfection, so WHY aren't they practiced?
