Don't be one of the "afflicted"....

Image
Image by Paolo Màrgari via Flickr http://www.cyberfraud.org.uk/risk/identitytheftrisktest.aspx There are a few Sites who are occupy themselves with "Cyberfraud" - Here is one based on UK experiences and laws, but is in general valid in most "advanced" countries, to a level more or less the same! I like the "test my PC " feature on this Site - a bit of a game, but a serious one - even although the advice given is logical, it's surprising how many people ignore or are not aware of things to watch out for!Go have a look and read all about it!   TURISS ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT CHANGES: MELLINGER ASSUMES CEO ROLE SCAMMERS TARGETING STRUGGLING STUDENTS TRACKING DEVIOUS PHISHING WEBSITES FREDDI THE PLASTIC FROG REVEALS THREAT OF ONLINE FRAUD LONDON CYBER CRIMINALS FACE JAIL FOR NATWEST FRAUD IDENTITY THEFT LIKELY TO HARM E-BUSINESS MCAFEE INTRODUCES EDUCATION PROGRAMME FOR US SCHOOLS LONDON CYBER CRIMINALS FACE JAIL OVER NATWEST...

More things that can happen.....!

(to enlarge any image, simply click on it). Do you really look down deep into your PC system to find out whether somebody else can get hold of your details....? Or do you, like most of us, simply rely on your AV System - it will figure out id something "fishy" is going on....? Well - I've got news for you! There are many ways that a "malware" or "malperson" can get onto your wavelengths, sometimes completely by accident, sometimes on purpose, sometimes by mistake, sometimes not. Sometimes the details are usable, often not - due to other factors required. Your CB (Visa etc) can be dechiffered, and used, but not mine - because I've only got overdrawals on my Bank Account! It's just one of thos "uneasy" feelings. Somebody else, even family members, have no business looking at what I'm doing, have done, or maybe will do! Not even "by mistake" and not unless they've been invited to do so, or have told me that they COULD....

Thanks for telling me....!

Fight SPAM-but watch what you want to...!

Image
I receive, on average, a couple of things from mainly well meaning people every week. Generally they are diapos, slideshows, images, videos etc.. which they found interesting, and wanted me to see as well. Very kind of them, and often I AM pleased to look at them. What I am generally not too pleased about is to find my e-mail address on the top of these messages, along with sometimes HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of other poor people's addresses. These are those mails entitled "RE"-"FW"-RE-FW etc.......... It's a quick way of sending the thing concerned, but what the senders tend not to realise is that this comes from a "scam" and leads to a "spam"! These things are placed on the net to get you to send them to others. They even ask you to do so - often! What happens is - you send it to all your friends/colleagues etc., they send it to all their mates and others, and so on..... Each time it's forwarded, it carries with it ALL the e-mail addre...

A quick lesson in WORMS and things....!

Image
A lot is talked about "Worms" - "Trojans" and other things similar! Just to give you an insight, here is an article about one of the most serious threats in the last few years - alreadyover 9million PC's have been infected, and are merrily spreading further! The people who construct these things, I'm told, are often frustrated PC specialists..! If you haven't blocked the hole in your system yet, go to "Start - All programmes - Windows update - run the search for quick critical updates and install preferably ALL the updates shown as recommended for your PC, but at least all the updates referring to "Malware" - Security" etc.... It may take quite some time, but reinstalling and retrieving lost material will take longer....! (iwmpop) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...

Bugs......?

Image
Don't be reduced to this - try the link given..! It's a great shame, but even in this period of Worldwide FLU Bugs, there are other bugs as well...! Information and Computer ones for example! At the moment, bugs are being presented on e-mail News updates, those things you would think to be relatively safe! To find out about this, and look at lots of other risky things, go to this link, or just click on the title. "SOPHOS" is a bona-fide Website which alerts you about new bugs and risks, and it's always better to be warned and aware than bugged down...! http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2009/01/09/cnn-israelhamas-headlines (Just click on the title or copy/paste the above link)

And your Security counts too...!

Because I receive mails from you, I would like to beleive that you have an Anti Virus system installed and working.....! You don't have to buy them anymore, these systems that help everyone, here is a link to 7 different ones, all FREE OF CHARGE, all downloadable and all very workable..! If you haven't got one, or if it's an "obtrusive" (in other words keeps popping up with new warnings just to let you know it's doing something) system, or if you're going to have to pay again for a new one or an update, throw it out, and take one of these! Whilst you're waiting - don't send me (or anyone) e-mails....! The link is in French, but the names are in English, and if/when you open one of the programmes, you can choose between many different languages. http://www.journaldunet.com/solutions/securite/selection/7-antivirus-gratuits-pour-se-proteger-sur-le-web/7-antivirus-gratuits-pour-se-proteger-sur-le-web.shtml (click on the title of this article, or copy/d...

More news for your security

Image
The above image is a screenshot of an illegal (illegal because it didn't ask me...!) "Rootkit" which installed itself on my PC some months ago. I detected and eliminated the thing (From Windows-supposedly to help me to use their .NET Passport programme) using "AVG Antiroot Kit". If I mention this, it's just to show how easy it is for almost anyone to install something on your PC - without your knowing. It's also just as easy to get rid of it once you know it's there! Incidentally - NOT having this rootkit hasn't made the slightest difference to my .NET Passport services...!
