Business figures!
At the moment, with all the poor little rich people getting hammered, comes the news that someone, somewhere (they say in a French Bank) has done a fraud to the amount of 7.2 milliarde euros!
This set me to thinking "find out finally just how many zero's there are in a milliarde".
Not as easy as you may think - it seems that the business world, International as it is supposed to be, has it's problems with the question.
Seems that occasionally there are problems from one country to another when using "milliarde"- "billion" - and such words.
Some countries insist that a milliarde be called something different, and have 12 zero's behind the qualifying number (after all, 0,000,000,000,000,000:00 still equals 0! The problems, or happiness, start when you put a POSITIVE number at the beginning!)
Seems that, in general, a milliarde (in civilised countries) takes 9 zeros, so our little laddy in France has magically "made disappear" the sum of: 7,200,000,000,000.00euros!
Not bad, but what the hell is or would he have done with it? Put it back in the same whence it came, and live on the interest?
Daily interests of? Well, 1% (if my workings out are right) would be around 720,000,000.00
and being a financial wizard, he probably would want to invest it somewhere "SAFE" where he would get a minimum (but without risk) of 3%, therefore three times 720,000,000.00 (work it out yourself, I'm fed up!).
Always assuming, of course, that he could get rid of this immense sum, daily, without fail, every day, Sundays included, even on Bank holidays! That's one hell of a lot of Champagne, or stately homes or whatever, every day!
If he doesn't manage it, then his problems become a crisis, his daily "ready to spend-MUST spend" amount just grows larger, and his problems too.
This is where the Government steps in and helps him out. Taxes will allow him to forget about 90% of the daily "must spend" amount, and even then, if he still doesn't spend the rest every day, and it carries on growing, then the State will help him out again!
Which would (and does) lead to another question - Where the devil is the State putting all this money? Is it treated as a "windfall" for the state, and does the State therefore pay "windfall" taxes as in various countries is necessary?
Having read and re-read this article, I'm just glad that all I've got are debts! The State can't tax them, but it doesn't help me either!
