A day in the year of.....

Image
Well - seems that I lost a week somewhere! I was just going to celebrate Karneval today when I thought it strange that there was nothing on the TV from Germany . Yes - the French were going on about Carneval in Nice, something else went badly wrong in Rio, but nothing from Germany!  Well - now I know why..... I'm sure you all know about Carneval, Karneval, Fasching, Mardi Gras and all the rest, but did you know that one of the traditional table feasts on these days, at least in Germany, is this:      I have investigated with no success. I'm not sure, it could be "leberwurst" or "chocolate mousse", I think the little eyes are egg white rounds with black olive slices, on the other hand, it could be what you first thought - Karneval is a crazy time.....! It comes from the Blog  http://frauliebe.typepad.com/frauliebe/7-sachen/  (in German) but I can't find a description. It might interest French, American or British ladies to have a peek and see just h...

The NOBLE art of......ironing or "repassage".....

Image
I can't just stand by and listen to this ancient and noble art being maligned. Personally, I like nothing better than a crispy piece of freshly ironed linen in my bed, on my body....I like feeling good..... What's with these modern, militant, masochistic females who have never felt the sensuality of fresh linen gliding down their hips,  who have never felt......GOOD!   Don't they learn it any more at school? This noble art? Just what do they learn in "Domestic Science" classes nowadays....do these arts exist anymore....they don't learn cooking, that's for sure, except how to order a doggy bag, open a microwave oven door (and still manage to burn it)  ...don't ask me how, seems always to be the fault of the "equipment" Everybody does - or should - do it...... ....everybody......... and once they've started, they love it. And.....while I'm upsetting the thoroughly modern young millycents', how about sewing and darning......? O...

Mrs Kathleen MITCHELL (née ODELL)

Image
Mrs Kathleen Mitchell (née ODELL) My wife Kathleen ( née  Odell), was quite an exceptional woman.  I suppose many husband's say the same thing of their wives , but through  the almost 25 years of our marriage, up to her death 18 years ago on the  3rd March,  I was constantly surprised by her resilience. We were often the only two " British " people in whole areas of  Germany  or  France , and although unable, at the beginning, to speak the languages  concerned very well, we learnt very quickly, and it's not easy when you have  to deal with civil servants , speaking their own local dialect of German or  French ! My story with my wife started in 1963/64, when she found herself installed in Germany, as a condition to her being accepted by  Guy's Hospital ,  London ,  to fulfill her 6 month's overseas "experience". Guy's insisted on this at the time,  and it wasn't ...

Image via Wikipedia Lots of new things..... When you change operating systems , when you get out of the clutches of Microsoft , Windows , Bill Gates and all the rest of the graspers, and when you move over to something as terribly complicated as "UBUNTU" (I'm only saying that to frighten you all away) so expensive that your Bank Manager is almost tempted to say "Good Morning" to you (UBUNTU is free) then you suddenly find what "surfing" - what Internet can actually be used for! It's amazing! This particular little "blog entry" is using a thing called "Blog Entry" available via UBUNTU, like about 36,000 other little logicials and apps - all for free - of course! If I live to a bi-centurial level (I hope for your sakes that this will not happen) I'll never use all of the things available. But.......being of Scottish origins, I can tell you that it's a fantastic feeling - just knowing you can put two or more fingers...
