True 2 years ago - still true now...

Image
I like these older articles, particularly when years later, nothing has changed....! ************ Embarrassed! For quite some time now, I've been a little bit embarrassed at the situation in UK. Although I have very little - or rather nothing at all - to do with the place, I would have to be blind and deaf not to notice the influence of certain people in all aspects of daily life in that  "green and pleasant land" - England   note well, just England, not Britain. Seems that the English have now finally woken up to the fact that they are a part of the UK, and not vice-versa! And....... It seems they don't like it!  Lots of mutterings are going on about another one of those "United Kingdoms"!   A little place, that up till recently had to be content with being a sort of Englishman's Castle, a place where the Englishman could drain off all natural resources, and pour the results into his own coffers, and from there - down the sink! A place ...

Copy of A few words in passing-Quelques mots en passant..

A few words in passing....

Image
Just yesterday I made some comments on Facebook regarding the Tramway at Montpellier, and this morning I wake up to hear that the "Champion" of this project, Georges Freche, is dead.He died yesterday evening,   in his office at Montpellier, signing papers in his position of Président du Languedoc-Roussillon. Long time Maire de Montpellier, he died from a heart attack, despite having been operated earlier at the beginning the century. He was well known for various outspoken things, he was what the French call a  "provocateur"   and had been expelled from his party - The Socialists, in 2008 for being too outspoken, but continued, as an "Independant Socialist" to win the last Regional election and stay in his position. It's a strange co-incidence that I, and my wife, lived in Bavaria, Western Germany, when the President of Bavaria, Franz-Josef STRAUSS,   died unexpectedly and abruptly. There were many similarities in their characters, altho...

Cars and things concerning them....

Mr. le Marquis du Galipot       (iwmpop)        iwmpop@gmail.com For your pleasure!   -    Pour votre plaisir!     -    Fur Ihrer Unterhaltung!             ********  An older post but still valid.... Automobiles! GOOD AND BAD NEWS! – “Good News”. I just saw a report about something adorable for about 99% of all car Drivers, a new, fully automated system of parking in that parking place that's too small for mortals to succeed! The thing takes over, on the press of a button, you don't touch anything, and it parks itself! In the report I saw, it didn't touch anything apart from the free space! Same system is used/usable when you can't get your 2nd car into the Garage, AND open the doors to get out!  You just line the car up in front of the gar...

Why should only Facebook friends get to see this...?

This is a little "note" I made and published on Facebook (you can join me by searching for "Ian Mitchell" on Facebook and then sending me a request to become ANOTHER one of my friends....) but I thought - well, why should they be the only ones to see it? ******** Crikey and stuff.... by  Ian Mitchell  on Saturday, 23 October 2010 at 07:47   (Actually in 2006 - I think!) Un peu plus tard encore - ouverture simple et rapide..!  Zips are so useful for opening and closing things.....! ************* I got an e-mail from a friend asking about the REAL situation here in Southern France, or France in general. I wouldn't normally reply via Facebook, but this time I thought it may be interesting to do so, simply to reach more people - some of them also being in France, and they could maybe tell us all what the situation is like in their neck of the woods. Here, in the South of France, I have no problems, as my friend correctly noted, I ...

Remember...? No..? Sad for you..it's too late now..!

The World WAS "once upon a time" an interesting experience..... ********** Travelling Adventures in the stone age..! Travelling Adventures in Europe long before mass tourism.....! I remember a time (like many of you, without doubt) not so long ago, when a voyage  was  an adventure.  In the space of a couple of days, within Europe, we changed systems, languages,  currency, standards of living, among many other things. I recall when even a trip to  France was  fraught with problems, difficulties, amusing situations, dangerous situations Starting with the very vehicle we were using, which then were not really up to scratch  for such voyages.  Their reliability was limited, if you were coming from UK, the steering wheel was  (and still is) on the wrong side of everything (roads, petrol pumps, motorway payment  booths etc). Sometimes one wondered whether the petrol was the same and the  guaranteed breakdowns mean...

Not too unexpected, really!

I haven't spent any "serious" time in "Great Britain" for over 40 years, but my last experience before leaving the shores of the "green and pleasant land" for good, back in 1969/70, was in selling our 2 bedroom appartment in a London suburb - Thornton Heath. We had bought it in 1968 ready to serve as our base after Army services, for the princely sum of 3,500GBP. The mortgage was given on a fixed interest basis by the Government, due to my status in the Army, was due to run over 25 (!) years, after which the leasehold of 99 years would be available to us. It was a nice, comfortable place, in the style of Victorian "mansions" and at the time even had a "commissaire" in the large entry hall. If you've ever seen the TV series "Poirot" then you've seen the style. Problem was that we never used it - we were in Germany permanently, so we tried "letting" it. After 2 attempts, both unsuccessful because the o...
